Sanaa Lathan does Skin Flick - Essence Music Festival 2008
Tony Award Nominated Actress, Sanaa Lathan, sits down with Corey Chavous to discuss her career, the Essence Music Festival, and her new documentary on skin.
*Skin is amazing: it covers our body, and reveals our soul. For many, skin is a symbol of pride, for others it's a canvas to tell a story - and for almost all it represents a heritage to be honored.
Skin means something different to almost everyone you ask. As part of a Vaseline Cocoa Butter campaign, people around the globe were asked: "what does your skin mean to you?"
The responses, which were compiled in a short film called Vaseline Skin Stories, finds that while continents may divide us, the experience of skin unites us.
The film, narrated by Tony Award- nominated actress Sanaa Lathan, premieres at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans on July 4, 2008.
The 20-minute Vaseline Skin Stories documentary, set against local, social and cultural backdrops, features personal narratives from across the world including the United States, South America, the United Kingdom and Africa.
The inspirational stories touch on the similarities and differences between people's skin as it relates to their lives. The film is enriched with a special voice over by Sanaa Lathan, as well as a brief introduction where Lathan shares her own personal story of what her skin means to her:
"My caramel brown skin represents me but also my history and those who came before me and will come after. They were all shades and beautiful. I honor, love and take pride in my skin because of them."
The popular brand, Vaseline, is manufactured by Unilever.

Will Smith Performs Live @ Premier of HANCOCK Afterparty
Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman at the Hollywood Premier of the new movie Hancock. Also, at the afterparty, Will Smith freestyles and drops a little 'Summertime' on the crowd.
By William Keck, USA TODAY
HOLLYWOOD — Jamie Foxx, Amanda Peet, Chris Daughtry, Queen Latifah and a very pregnant Minnie Driver turned up at Grauman's Chinese Theatre Monday night to watch Will Smith save the world once again, this time as an ambivalent superhero in Hancock.
But where was Smith's main man, Tom Cruise, who has turned up at almost every one of Smith's movie premieres since Cruise and Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, co-starred in 2004's Collateral?
"He still had some things to do for Valkyrie," said Pinkett Smith of her friend's 2009 Adolf Hitler assassination plot drama. "But he let us know, 'Sorry, I can't make it tonight.' "
Pinkett Smith wowed in a jade Herve Leroux gown, while her husband called himself "aggressive" for turning up in a Tom Ford checkered suit. "I was feeling sexy about myself," said Smith, 39.
He also is feeling optimistic about the chances for a sequel for Hancock, which opens nationwide Wednesday. "Depends on how this one opens — and it's looking pretty good," Smith said. "And (screenwriter) Akiva Goldsman has an amazing idea for a I Am Legend 2 prequel" that would feature the return of his character's pet dog in last year's hit film.
In Smith's latest film, careless superhero Hancock uses his strength to cast vehicles aside like toy cars. Sony tried to copy some of the more violent scenes for the movie's premiere by littering Hollywood Boulevard with crashed autos covered in pieces of pavement.
Director Peter Berg, who is responsible for the film's many bang-ups, confessed to having years of dangerously close calls during his reckless youth. "I was in car accidents, boat accidents, motorcycle accidents," he said. "I've been in a lot of accidents. But Hancock's about having some fun. We're not out to traumatize anyone."
Berg shot a scene in which Jason Bateman's character, a public relations whiz who tries to alter Hancock's image, gets in a nasty car wreck. It was a scene all too familiar to Bateman.
"I was car racing once and flipped upside down doing about 130 miles per hour," Bateman recalled. "This is when I was young, dumb and full of (it) — when I was about 19 or 20. I could have used sweet Hancock to swoop down and save me from the madness."
But there was no painting co-star Charlize Theron, who plays Bateman's wife, as a damsel in distress.
Theron turned serious when asked about a time she could have used a hand from Hancock. "Maybe I don't need Hancock's help," she scolded. "Maybe you should stop looking at me like I'm a victim."
Though the evening's disaster theme seemed lost on Theron, it continued inside the afterparty, with burning cars and a correctional facility bus on site and guests dining in prison cells.
Smith's son, Jaden, who turns 10 next week, left the VIP area with a nanny and two bodyguards to hop on a bungee-cord ride. Later this summer, the Smith family will go to Bali for more fun before heading to Africa on a charity mission.
"We're going to Rwanda and Kenya to do some work for Malaria No More," Pinkett Smith said.
Turns out her husband requires but one thing while traveling the planet on missions. "Golf is really the only thing that occupies my mind other than making movies," Smith said. "If I don't have a golf course, I'm dying."

The Wackness - Johnathine Levine on being 'Real'
Jonathan Levine calls "The Wackness" a "second first film." In a way, he's speaking for his whole cast. While Levine is making his debut as a writer after helming the much buzzed-about (but still unreleased) teen horror comedy hybrid, "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane," he hired an eclectic cast for his latest film that includes Nickelodeon staple Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby ("Juno"), Method Man, Famke Janssen, Sir Ben Kingsley, and in case you hadn't heard, Mary-Kate Olsen. It's an unusual ensemble for an unusual coming-of-age story of a teen (Peck) who forms an unlikely friendship with a psychologist (Kingsley) by trading marijuana for therapy in 1994 New York. It's clearly a personal story for Levine, but it's not an autobiographical one, though both he and Peck both sweated out sticky summers in Manhattan, listening to Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa" a generation apart. Now, the two have collaborated on a generational anthem of their own that bridges the gap.
Even though this is set in a very specific time and place, there's something very universal about it as a coming of age experience — was that something that really came out in the script for you?
Josh Peck: No question. Granted, in '94 I was eight years old, rocking shoes with lights in them and watching "Power Rangers," but I think the universal thread throughout the movie was the plight of Sir Ben's character and my character Luke, their disillusionment and cynicism and not having the support structure that most of us come to lean on. It seemed to me that Luke, at 18, was just becoming a man, but what constitutes [that] — experiences? Relationships? You can go to war and you can vote, but what does it really mean? That's initially what drew me in.
Jonathan Levine: Everything crystallized once he walked into the room. Even though a lot of this character comes from my personality and my own experience, I had no idea of what [he] looked like or how he carried himself. It wasn't necessarily about the time period. I was constantly impressed by the ways in which [Josh] was making this character his own and in doing that, it allowed me to have a little distance, a little perspective.
Did you find it easier to write from personal experience,or was it something that you looked back on and realized you had injected more of yourself into than you initially thought?
JL: The latter, definitely. I wrote and I wrote and I wrote, this very digressive 140 page first draft [that] just came from the lack of my censoring myself. Looking back, [I'd say] these are the themes I'm working with, this is what I should magnify, this is what I should cut.
I was Paul Schrader's assistant for six months before I went to film school, and he's very much about knowing what's going to happen on every page before you even start writing dialogue — the entire plot and character arcs are mapped out. When he would leave the office, I'd sneak looks into his old files and there'd be the yellow piece of legal paper with a handwritten "Page 10 - Travis meets Iris." (laughs) But this was a serendipitous thing; the more I wrote, the more it felt like the right thing to be doing.
Jonathan, you've mentioned in previous interviews that you wanted the Notorious B.I.G. on the soundtrack because his music was a deeper than he's given credit for. From the title on down, "The Wackness" seems like it might be a pretty superficial movie, but Ben Kingsley signed on after comparing his character to Falstaff. Was it your intention to make something that worked on both those levels?
JL: For me, the number one goal was always to entertain people, make them laugh and make them feel for the character. But the more we give the audience the cues that they're used to, and I actually learned this on "Mandy Lane," the more you're able to subvert that. You can do more if you're safely protected by both the genre and by giving the audience the traditional things that they want.
I'm an audience member as well, and I don't want to be bored or overtly preached to, either, but I think that ["The Wackness"] was a great forum in which to ask deeper questions than you would normally expect from this type of movie. You hope at the end of the day that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and I think that if you have it in the story, and I was aware we had it in the story, then that's a good start.
I remember David Gordon Green getting criticized for "All The Real Girls" because people were saying oh, he's too young to be nostalgic. With "The Wackness," was going back a decade a little strange?

The Wackness - Olivia Thirlby "I've broke a few hearts..."
Olivia resides in New York City where she was born and raised. She has trained extensively in classical Shakespearian acting in New York at the American Globe Theatre, and in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She began acting professionally in 2003, and plans to pursue a career in both theater and film.
It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, is only beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radio, graffiti and public drunkenness.
Two people, however, are missing out on the excitement. Luke (Josh Peck) is a socially uncomfortable teenage pot dealer with no friends, issues with his parents, and a whopping lack of confidence with girls. He trades weed for sessions with his therapist, Dr. Squires (Sir Ben Kingsley), whose much-younger wife (Famke Janssen) is slipping away from him. Squires, a drug-addled shrink with a hairline retreating to the back of his neck and a state of mind slouching back to adolescence, is an unlikely role model—but the two of them forge a friendship based on a mutual need: neither one is getting laid.
Propelled by an exuberant hip hop score, "The Wackness" captures the spell of 1994--a time of pagers, not cell phones; a time when Tupac and Biggie were alive but Kurt Cobain had just died. Funny and moving, "The Wackness" is an offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity.

BET Awards 2008 - Tracey Edmonds
BlackTree TV catches up with Tracey Edmonds on the red carpet of the Pre BET celebration for CEO Debra Lee.
LOS ANGELES - Beneath towering arches in an old cathedral downtown, a 20-member choir welcomed guests at the BET Awards pre-party with a rousing gospel tune.

Nelly, Ashanti, Jermaine Dupri and Jill Scott were among those who gathered Monday at Vibiana — a majestic church built in 1876 — for a private dinner hosted by Black Entertainment Television chairman Debra Lee.
As preparations for Tuesday's BET Awards, which recognize the best in black entertainment in 15 categories, continued at the nearby Shrine Auditorium, nominees, sponsors and industry executives dined and danced in honor of the occasion.
"This night gives us a reason to celebrate," Lee said. "We're truly honored to be able to recognize the artists who are so important in our community. Not just the music, but the actors and athletes."
Nominee Soulja Boy said he was glad to be included.
"I hope I win," the 17-year-old rapper said. "The BET Awards represents me, where I come from and everything."
He was especially excited about seeing fellow nominee Lil Wayne perform on the show.
Dupri, a producer who has worked with Mariah Carey and Usher, said he still gets a thrill from seeing celebs at the BET Awards.
"You get all the stars under one roof," he said. "And it continues to grow."
The historic cathedral took on a tropical vibe, thanks to bouquets of pink and purple orchids atop lime green tablecloths. Partygoers, including MC Lyte and Tyrese, boogied on the dance floor before sitting down to a dinner of lobster-and-grapefruit salad followed by a grilled veal chop.
Scott, who is set to perform a tribute to lifetime achievement award honoree Al Green on Tuesday's show, kept things cooking into the night with a spirited set backed by an 11-piece band.

Based upon Mark Millar's explosive graphic novel series and helmed by stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov—creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the Night Watch series—Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, the world will be introduced to a hero for a new generation: Wesley Gibson.
25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut.
Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie).
After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself.
With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

The public has finally had enough -- as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think -- until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all.
