CEREBELLAR DISEASE
Taking up the inferior and posterior aspect of the cranial cavity, the cerebellum is the second largest structure attributed to the brain. Positioned within the metencephalon, it is segregated via the transverse fissure from the overlying cerebrum. The transverse fissure accepts a segment of the meninges known as the tentorium cerebelli. The cerebellum is created by two hemispheres and one area of central constriction known as the vermis. Protruding between the hemispheres is the falx cerebelli, which is part of the meninges. The outer layer of the cerebellum is like that of the cerebrum, a slight layer of gray matter. This gray matter layer is known as the cerebellar cortex. The white matter beneath this outer layer is much thicker. Parallel and slight folia is created by the convolutions of the gray matter of the cerebellum. When looking at the brain from a saggital viewpoint, the arbor vitae can be clearly distinguished, looking like a network of white thin matter branching off in all directions. The nerve bundles, which are created by three equally paired groups of nerves, in known as the cerebellum peduncle. The peduncle is a supportive structure that assists in laying the groundwork for the cerebellum's communication with the rest of the brain. Connecting the cerebellum with the midbrain is the superior peduncle. The nerves of the bundle, or more specifically the fibers of the bundle, begin their existence from the specialized dentate nuclei that is housed by the cerebellum. Passing through the red nucleus to the thalamus and then continuing on to the motor areas of the cerebral cortex, the cerebrum is then able to receive the appropriate feedback and communications via impulses. Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia "Gordon"
Here is "Gordon" as a kitten and later as an adult (today) at the end of the video (15 months old). He was birthed by his mother in the rafters of a barn, and fell down from the nest, then he was taken in by us. Although his condition may be due to the fall, it has the symptoms of Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It's almost like his hind motor skills are separate from his front. As a kitten he would frequently flip over forward (seen once in the video). We now nickname him "Dink" because on hard floors his deliberate footsteps are "dink, dink..." As an adult he is able to function fine, not all cats with this condition are so lucky. The only thing special about his care is blocking him from stairs to another level of the house with a baby gate. The more he is able to concentrate on his standing/walking/running, the better he is able to do. When his attention is diverted, that's when he tends to fall over. This cat is very people friendly brings us a lot of love. The black cat in the video is blind, and it's the same story with him. Please give imperfect animals a chance!

Zero Playing-Cerebellar Hypoplasia
This is my 3 year old kitty Zero, who was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Like other cats with CH, Zero is very wobbly and has a hard time controlling his muscle movements. This is why he looks "jumpy" or "spazzy" when he moves around. By no means is CH a death sentence, and with a little patience and extra care, CH cats make wonderful, loving pets.

~3 mo. old - Puu, Maru Play! Cerebellar hypoplasia
Video of my two cats, Puu (calico) and Maru (tortie) when they were about three to four months old. They are from the same litter, but Maru was born with cerebellar hypoplasia. As you can tell, her motor skills primarily are effected; she's unique in that the cerebellar seems to effect only the lower half of her body.

Cerebellar abiotrophy
Cerebellar abiotrophy is a genetic recessive disease in Arabian horses. It is also called Cerebellar cortical abiotrophy, cerebellar hypoplasia, or cerebellar ataxia. It is characterized by head tremors, lack of coordination and inability to gauge distance. Most are hyperreactive and startle easily. Many affected horses also move with an odd head-bobbing motion and have exaggerated leg movements. In short, horses with this condition do not have a sense of depth perception or of spatial relationships. They literally don't know where they are. They can see and learn, so they begin to use other senses to compensate. This filly has "memorized" where things are located, but when excited, she still miscalculates (as seen in the video where she almost collides with a fence) Its cause is the atrophy of purkinje cells in the cerebellum, beginning at or shortly after the birth of the horse. Why the gene triggers this condition is not known. This filly was two years old at the time the video was taken. She has learned to compensate somewhat for her condition, but many foals are so severly affected that they are euthanized before they are a year old. However, even though she has learned to avoid hurting herself most of the time, she will never be safe to ride. There is no cure for this condition. Little can be done to treat it, other than to keep the horse in a calm environment where they experience very little change. The only hope is for researchers to develop a DNA carrier test to determine if a horse carries the gene, and once this happens, for breeders to then avoid breeding known carriers to one another. Research is ongoing at the University of California-Davis and at the University of Bern in Switzerland. Please support their efforts. Kitten With Cerebellar Hypoplasia
Our kitten has Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It is especially noticable in the ankles. Lots of kittens are put to sleep when they have this, but this kitten makes us laugh and is extremely friendly.
