Maningrida Traditional Music Compilation CD - new!
This video collage was recorded and put together by iDIDJ Australia to accompany a compilation of traditional Aboriginal music from Maningrida community. The video clip includes various Arnhem Land scenes, from hunting expeditions, scenic landscape shots, sacred site surveys, and playing cards at night. Roy Burnyila - a well-known didgeridoo maker from Ramingining - appears mid-way through the clip, talking about relationships to and ownership of land.
The music comes from an audio CD called "Maningrida Traditional Music Compilation". It was recorded in May 2006 by Stephen Marshall, and produced by Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation and Maningrida Arts & Culture. The compilation includes Walamangu Songs by Kevin Jawunygurr, Midjarn Songs by Jimmy Bungurru, Manjabrei-Balkarraynga Songs by Alan Carter, and last but not least, Yawk Yawk Songs by Ten Canoes actor Crusoe Kurddal (who played Ridjimirriril).
There are 26 tracks in total which run to 37.5 minutes.
This is a new release CD of which iDIDJ Australia is the exclusive international distributor. You can purchase a copy of this CD for AUD$30 in the iDIDJ Store. Re-sellers can purchase the CD for AUD$18 (minimum order 20 units):

Mamurrung ceremony from Maningrida at tanks camp Ramingining
This is a ceremony performed by Diyamu families from Maningrida, dancing and singing at 'tanks' camp at Ramingining in 1997. The Diyamu are Burarra-speaking Anbarra people with homelands located between Ramingining and Maningrida. Principal singers and dancers here include members of the legendary Letterstick Band. Superstar singer Colin Maxwell can be seen here whom I became good friends with, but like so many tragedies in Arnhem Land, passed away unexpectedly and well before his time several years ago. RIP brother, you were a true inspiration to so many. And your sweet voice will always soothe our souls in times of grief...
This was an entertaining Mamurrung ceremony which went on for a number of days. This is another clip that makes me feel sad, from missing so many friends and remembering the beautiful spirit of so many people...

Old Maningrida Mago, 1960s period
This is a wonderful 1960s mago from the stony escarpment country south-west of Maningrida. The artwork, comprising of rarrk patterning and infil dotting is reminiscent of Ronnie Djanbadi from Benamanarkagunora outstation, whose bark paintings from the 1960s-70s period have found their way into key private and public Aboriginal art collections in Australia and overseas.
This is a bloodwood mago as evidenced in the wavy grain pattern of the timber. The grain has opened up in places owing to age-related shrinkage, but these do not seem to leak air nor to lessen the instruments playability.
Darryl Digarrnga gives this mago a blast, the first Bininy to breathe life into this stick for 40 years or so. It still responds with generous warm acoustics... nice!
This is a museum-quality instrument that combines the ethnographic actuality of didgeridoo production in the 1960s with a genuine mago voice of 40 years ago.
It is offered for sale in the iDIDJ Store for those who might be interested:

School opening at Bulugaduru, Arnhem Land
This is a school opening at Bulugaduru outstation in 1997. Bulugaduru is an outstation of Maningrida, to the south of the main settlement.
Here, Gupapuyngu families from Ramingining and Milingimbi accept the honour of opening the school. The sacred Garniny sticks with feathered ornaments can be seen here, an apt symbolism that has its foundation in core Gupapuyngu ancestral knowledge and identity.
Joe Djembangu, known more commonly as "Batunggu" to family, leads the traditional performance and the actual opening of the school. I've not met a ritual leader in Arnhem Land who is as respected and feared at the same time as Djembangu, undoubtedly the most powerful Gupapuyngu leader and one of the most knowledgeable Arnhem Land ritual specialists in modern times.
There are also Christian elements in this school opening, as it was the time of a large combined Rally at Ramingining that had its conclusion 3 days later.
Ronnie Barramala and David Yirindili (White Cockatoo Group, deceased) can be heard giving short speeches at the end of this clip.

Tracking the Intervention - 44min. documentary
Jan 2008
Sending in soldiers and the police to 'stabilise' indigenous communities and check children for sexual abuse was always going to be controversial. But months after Australia's Federal Government seized control of 73 bush townships, banned alcohol and porn and overhauled welfare payments, what impact are their actions having? Are these 'harsh measures' justified or is this 'another step in the undeclared war against Aboriginal people'?
Night time in the Aboriginal community of Maningrida. Gangs of "lost children" roam about unsupervised. "Nobody cares for them and they've got nothing". Some don't look older than eight or nine. "Parents are not taking control because some fathers are on drugs, alcohol, smoking ganja. These kids are learning violence and drug use from their parents".
Last summer, an inquiry uncovered horrific levels of paedophilia in every aboriginal community inspected. Declaring the situation a "national emergency", the Australian government took back control of land given over to Indigenous rule. The army was sent in and new leaders imposed on communities with sweeping powers to seize the assets of Aboriginal organisations and expel anyone.
