Copper Thieves Blamed In KC Phone Outage
Massive phone outages were reported in the Northland area Wednesday after thieves stole 10 feet of copper from the phone lines, officials said.
AT&T told KMBC that as many as 800 customers in the Parkville area are without phone and Internet service. The thief severed the line, only to steal a small section of copper.
"They couldn't have gotten that much out of the copper. It's like robbing somebody for $10 and killing them," said Gerald Summa, who lost his phone service because of the theft. "Better find out who they are. There's no telling what they're going to do."
Crews are working to replace the lines. It may take several days to repair all of them. Officials told KMBC's Chris Nagus that the severed wires are from the 1960s and are not color-coded like current wires, which is making it more difficult to reconnect the lines.
This is the second phone outage caused by copper thieves in recent weeks. On March 29, thieves stole several hundred feet of cable from 43rd Street and Pittman Road in Kansas City.
Anyone with information in the thefts can call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
Meanwhile, the demand for copper is on the rise and the price could rise to $5 a pound in six months. Currently, copper costs $3.85 a pound.
The theft of copper cable is costing power companies across the country millions of dollars in repairs and replacements.
